The Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI), Chinese Academy of Sciences, would like to invite you to attend the RADI Unveiling Ceremony, which will be held at 14:00 - 15:00, Monday, April 22, 2013 at Beijing International Convention Center, immediately before the opening of ISRSE35.
RADI was established in September, 2012, through the consolidation of two CAS institutes: the Institute of Remote Sensing Applications (IRSA) and the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth (CEODE). The consolidation aims to pool the advantages of both institutes in the fields of remote sensing and Earth observation to promote the development of cutting - edge scientific research and to meet national and global demands in this field.

ISRSE35 Side Meeting: GEO Ecosystems SBA work meeting 2013-3-18
Ecosystems are a crucial research theme and a central topic for GEO, also in view of the many environmental and climatic changes humankind is now witnessing - as well as producing on the biosphere. Recovering existing data, supporting new measurements and observations and make all data availableto scientists, stakeholders, policy-makers and concerned citizens are keys to provide a full picture of the state and temporal evolution of ecosystems in our changing planet.
In this Side Meeting of ISRSE35 in Beijing, we intend to discuss the ongoing and future activities and structure of the GEO Ecosystems Task, starting with the recovery of available data - including ground and in-situ measurements and remote sensing observations - and continuing with the possibility of new measurements and campaigns.

Call for Papers: International Journal of Remote Sensing (IJRS) Special Issue on Ocean Remote Sensing of China Seas 2012-12-03
A special issue of the IJRS on Ocean Remote Sensing of China Seas has recently been approved by the IJRS Editorial Board. The Guest Editors of this IJRS special issue are Dr. Xiaofeng Li from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) USA and Prof. Huadong Guo from the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI), Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.
The IJRS is published 24 times a year in online and print editions. For the past four years, IJRS has been the largest Remote Sensing journal in the world. With an SCI Impact Factor of 1.117 and an H-index of 83, it is also extremely influential, both within its own field and within the wider scientific community. Since 1994, the IJRS has published papers by authors from 122 different countries and been cited in turn by more than 8,600 researchers worldwide. The IJRS is concerned with the science and technology of remote sensing and the applications of remotely sensed data in all major disciplines.

Dear Colleagues,
It is with great pleasure that I cordially invite you to attend the 35th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE35), to be held in Beijing from April 22nd to 26th, 2013. This is the first symposium in the series to be held in China, and it is my honor to welcome you all to Beijing. With the expert guidance of the International Center for Remote Sensing of Environment (ICRSE) and International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), the 35th ISRSE is certain to continue the excellent tradition established by previous symposia.
The theme of the 2013 symposium will be "Earth Observation and Global Environmental Change - 50 Years of Remote Sensing: Progress and Prospects". Back in 1962, the first International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment was convened in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The symposium brought together scientists from around the world to exchange technical information on an emerging technology called remote sensing, a technology that provided the capability to view the Earth from high-altitude aircraft and, ultimately, spacecraft. In its 50 years of development, Earth observation has advanced significantly, and remote sensing has become a mature technology for observing the Earth and monitoring global environmental change. This symposium will review the progress of remote sensing and prospects for its future, and celebrate its half-century history.
The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) has addressed the emerging challenges human beings are facing, and marked the importance of global sustainable development. The "Future Earth", a new 10-year initiative established by the International Council for Science (ICSU) and other partners, has been undertaking scientific research on Earth observation for global environmental change and Earth system sustainability.
In this symposium, we hope to focus on the theories and applications that make Earth observation a crucial element in the study of phenomena related to global environmental change. Remote sensing technologies have long been indispensable tools in the numerous fields of environmental science, and their role is no less significant today in the still-nascent, interdisciplinary practice of Earth System Science. With the increased accessibility of interactive maps and virtual globes, along with the proliferation of spatially-aware devices and sensors, Earth observation is experiencing a kind of rebirth with unprecedented potential for innovation and discovery. It is an exciting time to be involved in the field, and the 35th ISRSE - held in a nation with huge investments in both Earth observation technology and environmental science - presents a valuable opportunity to shape the future of remote sensing.
I sincerely hope that you take advantage of this opportunity and join us in Beijing. It is a city representative of both the ancient and modern aspects of China, providing convenient access to some of China's most valuable cultural heritage. During your stay you will have a chance to explore Beijing and the surrounding area in the comfortable springtime weather that we enjoy here in the capital.
I greatly anticipate the success of ISRSE35, and look forward to your participation in 2013.

GUO Huadong
Chairman, ISRSE35
